We spent the next week (Monday-Monday) dealing with rain.... this has not helped Jimmy's situation either. We have spent countless hours at coffee shops, (almost a local at this point) wondering through tourist shops, bothering the staff and pups at A60N, playing endless amount of card games, got lots of reading done, and multiple trips to he library. Rick Brown let us borrow his truck for the week which was nice.
All the clouds, fog and rain can really start to take a toll on your emotional situation. Between are "busy" schedules we did get two fun trips in with A60N and their great guides!! And a few hikes of our own.
First we took a hike on Exit Glacier! What an experience that was, kind of scary thinking that the only thing keeping you on the ice are crampons. It was quite amazing to actually be walking on the glacier and for at least a hour. We got to see lots of crevasses and moulins! Of course Jimmy and i did not have our phones or a camera but luckily one of the guides, Alex, got a couple pictures of us.
Our second trip was a kayak trip out to Aialik Glacier. We took a water taxi about 3 hours out to Aialik Bay, which is in one of the boroughs in the Kenai Peninsula. On our way out we saw a family of 5 orca whales, sea lions, an otter, puffins and some eagles. Quite the collection of wildlife we saw on our way out. The water taxi drops you off in the bay and you get into your kayaks. We paddled for about 2 hours all together but we got to see cute little harbor seals poke their heads up in the water. We sat in front of Aialik Glacier for about 30 minutes listening to its rumbling and saw some impressive calving take place. You do not realize how big a glacier is until a bird fly by and it looks like a speck!!! Have i mentioned Alaska is gorgeous!
On our way back on the water taxi the water was not as calm... causing me to feel a little sick. It was a very bumpy ride which is fun until you start to feel nauseous. We did get to see more sea lions, jellyfish and a humpback whale!!! We had a great captain knowing all the good spots. :) the kayak trip was great fun and went with great people and a great guide which adds to the whole experience!!
A couple nights we went down to the docks to see what people caught for the day. The two biggest halibut we saw were 201 lbs and 118 lbs.... pretty impressive. It was fun to see what every one caught but was also quite smelly!
For a hour of entertainment one day we helped Rick brown move an old truck that has been sitting for at least 30 years. This was one of Jimmy's highlights on the trip! It was an awesome old truck but we learned a couple days after we left that he painted it...peer-pressure got to him.
The last day we were in Seward we went on a self tour mural hunt. Seward is known as the mural capital of Alaska.. we successfully found them all!!
Overall Seward was a great visit, even though the rain does bring you down a little it is still a great town. And if you have proper rain gear (which we did) it's not too bad, it's just not fun getting into a tent that is wet and everything feels damp.
Lucky for us a lady Jimmy knows, Vanessa, was driving her parents up to anchorage the day we were leaving... and she has a truck. Big win for us, we got a ride to anchorage!!! Sad the trip is coming to an end but i will definitely be back to Alaska... just in a car next time (Jimmy tells me he is never coming back, we will see about that).
